In 2019, as Rethink founders Tom Shepansky, Chris Staples and Ian Grais took steps to retire from the venture they kickstarted 20 years ago, many wondered what that meant for its chances at Agency of the Year in 2020 – it was, after all, coming off three big wins. Still hitting home runs, the Vancouver-based agency is adding yet another trophy to its mantle, having created powerful work for a slew of iconic brands with strong purpose and a ton of equity. Its success also comes from approaching every new project with an “everything is experience” mindset, says managing partner and head of strategy Sean McDonald – a creative approach that certainly worked in its favour when the world became void of physical interactions.
